Don’t do it! I keep seeing listings in Facebook Marketplace, and other selling platforms, for modems and routers. My first thought is always, “Oh, honey, no!”. My second thought is, “I hope they at least reset it”.
I recommend against selling your used modems and routers. If you DON’T reset it to factory defaults prior to sale, the buyer gets access to your SSID and password for your network. Even if you DO reset your equipment to factory defaults, there’s something called “data persistence”. To keep it simple, just don’t.
Then, even if you purchased your modem on your own (and it wasn’t given / rented to you by your internet service provider, or ISP), it may need to be deregistered from your account. Otherwise, when the buyer hooks it up, your ISP can get confused because there will be two modems online which are connected to your account. It can give your ISP quite the virtual headache and errors can occur which could result in problems with your connection.
